Dedham Natural Wonders Logo, Round 2

With this Dedham Natural Wonders logo I went in a totally different direction. I am using different wildlife such turtles, dragonflies, and frogs. The frogs are very fun to draw and kind of cute. I have embarked on designing a logo for the non-profit Dedham Natural Wonders. It is an organization with the mission to educate people on what nature we have right here in Dedham.

My initial idea was a monarch butterfly and spotted salamander. I drew then in Adobe illustrator and wanted to use each alone and with each other to form these logo ideas. Dedham Natural Wonders have decided to go in a different direction. We have discussed the use a native turtle or frog image for the logo. A new challenge for me but, I am up for it.

The Sensible Organizer Logo Final

This is the second round of the Sensible Organizer logo. It was mostly text and color changes. With all the social media I also had to design and modify the logo to fit within Facebook layout. It can be a challenge for logo designers.

This is the final logo in color and in black and white. When designing a logo you have to consider what it will look like in black and white. I think it works well here.

My friend JoAnn and owner of The Sensible Organizer, asked me to design her logo for her. This is the first round. She told me the colors that she liked and she wanted a more type oriented logo. She organizes for both businesses and individual clients. We both decided that using a photo or a particular icon might paint her business in a corner. I am working on the second round.

Brochure Elegance

CDA realty called me to put together this brochure for a property they are selling in Boston. It reminded me of the my Boston Symphony days. I designed many elegant pieces for the Symphony Season.

My client showed me several real estate brochures. Showing me what he liked and did not like in these brochures. He knew he wanted a border and the photos placed in a elegant and meaningful way. I adjusted the photos slightly by adding a bit more contrast but, the photos overall were beautiful and sharp. That made it easy to become excited about designing this brochure. I think it is a great piece to show a prospective buyer

Dedham Goes Pink Logo - Final

This is the final logos. Both have versions with and without the date. We decided to go with one color and no screens to be able to save costs on t-shirts. Which, is very practical and makes it a really good challenge for me. The round logo will be used on the shirts and the long logo will be used if it is more appropriate for this format. This is a town event and hopefully tons of people will attend.

This is a fun logo challenge and for a good cause. My client wanted to use the pink theme for the logo and also add in words that have meaning to fighting breast cancer. I wanted to show the client a round and a geometric choices for the logo design. I am also experimenting with adding in the date to some of the logos, my client wanted to see how it all lays together. I think the date works better with the round logos. I will keep you posted on her choices.

I got the chance to design the logo, many months ago. The club's look is going in a new direction. A more modern, cleaner look. I wanted to keep the flyer simple to be able to attract attention. Map Challenge

I am designing a brochure/poster for the first annual Dedham Open Studios (story here). This will be a big undertaking. This is the style map I would like to use. I have been using Illustrator. I think that is the best program to use. More flexibility with sizing and colors. I am using online maps for a basis.

If you have lived in Massachusetts or visited you would realize how confusing our roads are. I feel bad for visitors. That is a whole other story about our road layouts.

I think the challenge will be fitting in text and graphics to point people in the right direction to see the art and studios. This is my first pass and I know there will be lots of revisions. It will be interesting to see the transformation of the map. Stay tuned.

Jewelry Business, Cristina Hurley Jewelry

Months ago, I revamped Cristina Hurley's logo. She has come back to me to design her business card. She had the idea to put some of her beautiful work on the back of her card. Cristina asked me to make a simple design with a font that complimented the logo. This work represents what she does, very well. Oscar Poster Time II

I have seen The King's Speech and Black Swan. I loved both movies for different reasons. I have Inception at home and plan to see Winter's Bone and the Kids Are All Right, as well. I do like all these poster designs but the winner for me is Black Swan.

The photograph of Natalie Portman's face is so bold and compelling. It is a simple but powerful image. It really fits the movie which, is quite creepy.

My second choice is the King's Speech. I love the use of the orange and black and white photography. The lettering is simply done but elegant, as well. The movie was set just before WWII and I think the poster reflects the time of the movie.

It's Oscar Time

I love movies and watching the oscars! I use the DVR, who needs to watch all the commercials. I do try to watch as many oscar nominated films as I can. With ten of them that can be tough.

I also love movie posters, some good and some are cheesy. It is fun to get a little inspiration from these posters. the next five will be tomorrow. My favorite in this group is True Grit. It really captures the movie. I love the use of old fashioned western font and the old time wanted poster look. My second chose is 127 hours. I love how you see the title right away but it is not overwhelming.

Business Card Inspiration

Etsy ad campaign

I have decided to try some advertising for my Etsy shop. I would really love to sell more work and reach out to a bigger audience. I am trying a new thing, blog ads. I thought I would give it whirl.

This ad will be on the Dainty Squid blog next month. I wanted an ad that was whimsical much like the blog and the other ads. I really like the look and feel of this blog

This ad will be on the Seabird Blog. I found this blog through Windshield Diaries and was intrigued.

And this last ad will be on the fun blog Windshield Diaries. I have recently discovered this blog and was able to reserve a bigger sponsor space. I am very excited.

Kadre Health, the last

The final logo. I made some color changes and text changes to the logo. Presto the logo is completed. I used the font Century Old Style and News Gothic for the smaller text on the bottom.

The next round and getting close to the Top final logo. I took off the oval around the logo and put a circle around the stethoscope instead of the whole logo. I also played around with the color of the text and making the text bolder and a little bit bigger. The logo will be used on a sign for the business location.

Kadre Health The Next Step

This is the second round of Kadre Health logo design. I added in a small version on the bottom right to give an example on how the logo looks at a smaller size. The design is based on number 9 of the original set of designs. My client wanted to try some different color combinations using red, royal and navy blue. This design take a turn which, will be posted soon. It is always interesting how logos can evolve.

Color Index, A wonderful color tool

I love this tool for picking colors that go well together. The book suggests color combinations for two, three, and four color palettes. The combinations run the gamut from modern, art deco, intense, earth tones, etc... There is also a section showing colors and how they look with black and grays. I look at this book often to get ideas on color combos for my design work especially logo designing.

This is my first pass at a logo design for Kadre. My client is pretty open to colors, ideas, and fonts. That can be a fun challenge. It really makes you think about what a health care logo should look like. I also have to be careful not to design something that copies another health care company logo. There are so many companies out there. It can be tricky.

Recently, I stumbled upon this ecomerce site. I love the graphic quality of these housewares. They have a fun retro but, modern feel. The huset shop site has oodles of fun things to look at from dining to clothing. I like the sites creative photography of the items for sale. It gives you a sense on how you would use a product you ordered.

I also appreciate that they highlight the designer of each item by using thier name in the description of each item. The site features over 60 scandinavian designers and seeks out new emerging designers. You can learn more about the designers on the site in the bio section. Fun stuff

One of my favorite sites for fonts is dafont.com. There are always new fonts and and most of them are free. I love to look for unusual or handwriting fonts. It is hard to find a good handwritten fonts that don't look too goofy. There are also themes such as Mexican (above), Russian, Chinese, to name a few. There is a wide variety of fonts there is and that there are new fonts all the time.

Challenges of Social Media

I have recently had to modify this logo so it would look and fit better on a Facebook fanpage. Facebook can be an important part of getting the news about your business and organization out there. In the old days, not so long ago, when you designed a logo you had to worry how it looked on stationary, maybe a t-shirt or mug. You also had to design a logo so it looked good in black and white. Now social media is one more thing to consider. It will be an interesting challenge in the future.

ProjectStep Newsletter

For several years I had the pleasure of working with the hardworking folks at Project STEP to produce a newsletter highlighting the past season.

"Project STEP (String Training and Educational Program) identifies musically talented Black and Latino students and provides them with a comprehensive music training program, the primary goal of which is to prepare them to compete and succeed in the challenging, rewarding world of classical music."

I design a simple 2 color, 11"x14" newsletter with an insert thanking all their donors. The newsletter consists of articles on the past year's events, new board members, programs and graduations. Much work goes into preparing the articles and sending the photos for me to place within the newsletter and the finished product has nice set of articles hopefully, people will enjoy.

Christopher Palenscar can build and remodel kitchens, livingrooms, and other home projects. The client wanted a subtle and elegant logo to reflect the work that he does.

Cambridge Symphony Orchestra Brochure 2010

My newest brochure design for the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra. I have been designing this brochure for three years. They have added new and very elegant photos. They wanted to have a more sophisticated color scheme and look to the brochure. I am continuing the look and branding I established three years ago. I just ramped it up a bit. I also feel the new photos do add a new level of sophistication.

Music Logo Round III

This is the last and final round of design for this logo. It has been fun working on it. I had worked for the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a designer and had been surrounded by all things musical. It was nice to use that influence in designing this logo. The client has been great with being specific on what he wanted for a logo. The logo that won out in the end is 3D with the darker color.

I love this image. It really speaks to me in this age of digital. I have found this great website, Trendland for the newest trends in design and advertising plus a whole lot of other trendy stuff. For the story on the color wheel and more drawings look here. All of the antique color wheels and charts in the article were made from the 16th through the 18th Century.

Musician Logo Challenge

I am on a roll with logo designs. This is my first proposed logos for my client. He is a freelance timpanist and we discussed a more stylized look for his logo.

I was was trying to be more stylized with drums and drumsticks without looking like a weber grill. My client expressed an interest in using blue as a main color. After looking at these proposed logo, he has asked me to use my judgement in adding in other colors. The next round will be refining some of the looks that he likes and adding in some new colors.

It has been fun to work with all these circles and lines. The second round this week.

Gap logo Controversy

There is a buzz on this new redesign. I personally think it is lame. I am not a fan of helvetica, anyway. That little box in the corner really bothers me. It seems like an afterthought. It doesn't say hip and modern clothing to me. Any thoughts on the logo?

Greetings from Boston

Sometime ago, I posted a story about seeing a postcard and poster exhibit at the Boston Public Library. I was able to see the Greetings from Boston and the Vintage Travel Poster exhibit. I used to send postcards probably up until my early thirties. Now with all the technology we have now, postcards are not as popular. I do get a few here and there from friends traveling. Some of the subjects seem so funny to us now. Why would you send a postcard of a baby hippo?
I like the bottom postcard, I used to work at Symphony Hall and it pretty much looks the same as when it was built. Actually this view is same as it is now except for the age of the cars and the little bit of neon in the background.

The Dedham Junior Woman's narrowed down the logo choices to these three. We all voted for which one we liked. And the winner is, drumroll please, the bottom logo! I think it is a good choice. Hopefully, we will have some T-shirts made with the logo on it.

Hip Hop Logo fun

The Dedham Junior Woman's club asked me to design a logo for them. I am also, a member of this civic organization. A bunny was suggested because of the history of Dedham Pottery. It has become a symbol of the town. I decided to give them some choices of a stylized bunny and some alternative ideas. I was looking for something that symbolized our group and what we do as an organization. The club awards scholarships, works to help people in need, and other worthy causes. We narrowed it down to three and then we all voted on a final logo, that will be posted tomorrow.

Designed Announcement, Constant Contact

This was my design for a Constant Contact announcement. I designed this for a my client, Altieri Events, a local event company. The client wanted to announce a new employee and social event planner, Melinda Home. They have planned to send a direct mailer and the an dedicated e-mail.

Constant contact is a bit clunky but, I quickly got the hang of it. I wanted to pick out a layout that would be easy for the client to do themselves. The good thing about Constant Contact is the templates for the e-mails can be customized to your needs. You can also change the fonts and colors to look more elegant or more business like. I am glad I signed up for this e-mail service. It is another service I can provide for my clients.

My friend and fellow Boston Handmader, Cristina Hurley, has taken the plunge and open a new store/studio in Canton Center. I took a ride over to see her shop on opening day. It is a really nice space with plenty of room for her studio. She was making her unique pieces in her apartment. It was a bit cramped for her and her family. This will give her more room to create her beautiful and handcrafted jewelry. Each piece is different and she has made many new pieces for her shop

Cristina hired me to redesign her logo. She had a hand drawn double h for the middle. She needed a clean up of the logo. She wanted to use the logo in a bigger format, such as signs and banners. I based my design on the art she provided me. She wanted something simple on a white background. After a few rounds of using different fonts we came up with this design. I think the logo really stands and reflects her jewelry design.

These are some shots of her new studio work benches where she designs and fabricates her jewelry. She can now has plenty of room. I think it is great that when you visit her shop you may also get a chance to see her working

These are the first round of business card ideas. I put in a place holder for a tagline. It will be the choice of the business owner on a tagline or not. But, I wanted her to see what it would look like. Earlier, I had a post on the designs submitted to the client.

She choose the pink suitcase with the company name in the suitcase. It is cute and kind of sweet. The text and placement of the text may change. I will keep you posted on what she chooses.

I also, thought to give her an option of the logo on the front and her name and information on the back for a two sided card (bottom two cards)

My client books mostly travel for Disney and the Caribbean but also, Europe. She likes tropical and pastel colors. She wanted to have a slightly tropical feel.

Travel Design

I took a a trip into Boston for a haircut and to photograph. I visited the Boston Public Library. I can't believe I had never been to the original building with it beautiful courtyard. It was a oasis in the city. I also, was able to see the Greetings from Boston and the Vintage Travel Poster exhibit. The posters were very colorful and fun to look at. I even learned a few things about the vacation spots represented. If you are in Boston these posters are worth a look.

Stock Photos Online

Sometimes I only think of stock photo online shops are only for photographs. I often can buy inexpensive illustrations from stock companies, such as istockphoto.com These sites have been a great resource for me. Often, I don't have time or the talent to draw the pieces needed for a logo. The top example I purchased the silhouette of Italy, the second example, the horse, and the bottom the bowling ball and pin. The illustrations have allowed me to design a better logo or piece. For your next project you may want to consider a stock company.

Logo Clean up

My friend and fellow Boston Handmade member, Cristina Hurley is opening a new shop/studio in Canton, MA. She had a hand drawing for her logo. She wants to use this logo big and many sizes for cards, signs, stickers, etc. She asked me to clean up the image and choose a more modern font for logo. I redrew the logo in Illustrator. She gave me this hand drawn design to work with. (below). Cristina opens her shop in October

This is my first round of logo designs for this travel agency. My client specializes in booking trips for Disney and the Caribbean but would like to to book for European adventures, as well. She likes pastels and tropical colors. I didn't want to make it too tropical. People might not get she books other vacations besides tropical islands. This cool poster was designed by my friend and fellow designer/artist, Jaye Fresina. It is a poster for a documentary film by her brother David. I love the bold colors of this poster. It really grabs your attention. I like the use of her bold type. Very dramatic!

My newest logo design. The company originally wanted to show a person using a computer with a headset on. I did show them some ideas in that vain. I also, decided to see what the logo would be with just the headset and the company name. They like the colors Maroon and Navy blue. Here is the final.

Our Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, visited the Dedham Farmer's Market and Dedham Square. He talked to quite a few people and bought some food at the market. Dedham Square Circle asked me to design a poster to show all the community organizations that are active in Dedham. The them was to be patriotic but not over the top. I used some of my photos that I have taken of Dedham. It was fun to meet the Governor and hear him speak. The Governor is up for re-election this year.

My latest flyer! This one was a very fun one. I wanted a retro look to give you the feel of hanging out at Kings. The flyer is for a benefit party that Dedham Community House is having at Kings. Kings has a cool vibe and is a great place to bowl or just hang out with friends.

The Dedham Community House is a wonderful organization that hosts classes, has a fun outdoor pool and a summer camp. It is a wonderful asset to the community.

Italian School Logo

I have a new design challenge. A friend of mine would like to offer Italian classes to kids and adults. It will be small at first. She studied in Italy for a few years. She wants the logo to reflect Italy and the area she lived in Italy, Arezzo. She was looking for something like the Crest of Arezzo, with it's horse and crown. I wanted to design something similar but not a direct copy. Another challenge is using the two names. One in English and one in Italian. I have given my client a few choices on this first round.

My uncle recently, went to Paris. He did a little shopping over there. He knows will be going to Germany and France, next month. He sent me these funky gifts, a passport cover, luggage tag, and tote bag for my birthday. I the photo directly above is the wrapping paper they came in. So cool! All the gifts are from the shop Pylones. They are so bright and fun.

He knows I love tote bags. I am trying to be nice top the environment. In Europe it is better to bring your own bags. Check out the store for all their neat and fun things. From housewares to fun and games. Thanks Uncle John!

Wonder Woman Makeover

Wonder Woman has had the just about the same outfit for 69 years. I remember watching the show when I was a bit younger, circa 1975. Debra Winger was Wonder Woman's, side kick Wonder Girl Drusilla, for a few episodes. I loved the rope and the invisible plane. She both tough and beautiful! I like the new outfit. More modern, she looks very cool, tough girl who take on the bad guys and girls.

I did another round of changes. It was mostly color combination changes. Angry Bear picked the top logo out of all the logos. This was a fun challenge and I hope I can show you my progress on a logo again. It is fun to see the stages to get the look that a client wants. In this case, they went back to a previous set of logos. I think you have to see the a bunch of possibilities to make a decision.

The bear has been narrowed down. The clients wants to be bold and clear. They do also like the blue better than the green. The client was also worried the bear would not be seen in the boxes and they thought the Avatars (on left) needed more straight forward type. I am onto round three today.

I have designed this flyer for the Committee Arts at the Endicott Estate. I have joined the Dedham Junior Woman's Club last year. They do lots of great charitable work and contribute to the community. We are hosting a series of concerts this summer. We go from Children's music to Irish to swing. It should be a fun series. After I post this, I am off to take them to to businesses and hopefully they will post these posters. I picked a nice yellow to print them on to attract attention.

My client puts these ads in the local clipper magazine. His goal is to sell packages such as moonwalks and lil' splash slides. He wanted to spruce up the ads so he let make take a shot at putting together an ad. the result he went from 3 calls from the previous to 15 calls. That is a great result!

Seattle's Best Coffee Make-over

Starbucks has recently changed the Seattle's Best Coffee to this more modern logo. Some critics say it looks like a logo for an oil change chain. I personally am not in favor of this logo. I think it looks too generic. More of a Target Store type logo than a coffee logo. There has been a backlash over this logo. I let you make up your mind

My newest cover for the Dedham Historical Brochure. It will be part of historical tours that people can use when walking around historic Dedham Square. It has loads of information about the different Dedham historical houses and buildings. I think this will be the final. I also took the photos for this cover. It was fun getting the detailed shots. This projects is being produced through a collaboration between Dedham Square Circle and Dedham Historical Society.

Some of the photos were taken by me and the rest by Ned Roberts. A local Dedham resident. The timeline was an the inside middle spread. They wanted to show the programs in a timeline and be more dramatic than just a list. I think it worked
